Well, once again it has been a long time since I have been able to get back here to update my blog. Shooting fetish porn and living the life of a rubber goddess sure can be challenging. My membership site plans are taking longer then expected. It always seems to be this way and I have been so busy lately that I often find myself fantasizing about some type of escape from it all. One of my most common fantasies has been to be captured, encased, gagged, stuffed and otherwise shut off from the world in layers of rubber or even leather. What a vacation from stress it would be to just be an imprisoned sex slave; isolated away from any other focus but servitude and punishment.
Just the other night I was reminded of this fantasy while searching for a decent movie to watch. I was hoping to zone out and relax when I came across a repeat showing of "Pulp Fiction." I have always loved this movie for many reasons, but specifically the outlandish characters and crazy story line. In my opinion, it is true genius the way this whole movie plays out. It is as if all the bizarre and unusual things going on through the course of the film are regular everyday occurrences. That is one of the reasons Quentin Tarantino is a favorite film maker of mine. He seems to make that happen so effortlessly and since I myself am a bizarre character, I am obviously a big fan of his work. I do not know if Quentin is a rubber and bondage fetishist but he certainly seems know how to cater to those who are. I usually enjoy those things that are a bit taboo and he obviously has a unique character himself.
Getting back to the purpose of this topic, it has always been hard to ignore the famous scene where Bruce Willis and Ving Rhames are abducted and introduced into a bizarre world they had no desire to ever enter. I have always had a bit of a silent chuckle with myself when the command is given to "bring out the Gimp" and the leather clad slave is released from his resting quarters (a wooden crate with a cage inside), only to be dragged out for display amongst the other two captives. Is it weird? Yes, it is. Do normal people seem to be shocked by it? Yes, they do. Does the idea of being a gimp turn me on? Yes, it sure does; thus the reason I laugh to myself every time I see this part of the film.
I found an interesting topic of discussion. I forget where I stumbled across this, but the author posed a very good question:
"I have a bit of an argument here guys and I need your opinion, The Gimp in Pulp Fiction, Is he:
- A willing participant
- A previously captured prisoner who is being trained and now enjoys the treatment
- A captor who actually wants to escape but is obediently waiting for the right time?"
I used to find the term troublesome, as a non-submissive hood and mask fetishist. Its existence could lead drunk high and thick noobs at fetish clubs to make ill-informed assumptions. It annoyed me mightily as the term slowly came into general usage after Pulp Fiction came out. Originally people who used the expression just stood out as not having known that much about BDSM and fetish terminology when they used the term, because it was a sign that they had first encountered it in the movie. Now finally the term has entered the language and started to become common currency.
Here is the etymology as far as I am able to ascertain it: Gimp is a slang term synonymous with 'cripple' in the US and Canada. The scene in Pulp Fiction in which the word was used was actually written by Roger Avary, not Quentin Tarantino and he can be contacted via his website if anyone cares to have him confirm why he chose that word, but I feel that it is so straightforward that I have never thought it worth disturbing him.
I don't imagine Roger thought for a moment that the effect of having his dominant white-trash gay rapists using this (not uncommon) term of verbal abuse to their (consensual?) hooded masochist gay SM slave/sub whatever, would lead to people going, "Aha, I've learned a new word today! A gimp is a man in a leather hood who likes to kept in a box and be in bondage and be used sexually..." Because to US and Canadian ears, it just sounded like a familiar insult. What Mr. Avary probably did not know is the word gimp meaning cripple has never been used in Britain Ireland Australia or New Zealand, hence the above reaction.
And sure enough, for a long time the after the movie was released, the Gimp=hooded sub connection was only made in the UK and Australasia. One could invariably determine non-North Americanness of anyone using the expression (that's how I found that the man who created insex was a Brit).
Without wishing Mr. Avery any disrespect, my instinct is that it was all made up from nowhere, not researched. When you factor in the random abduction of passing strangers (especially injured armed criminal strangers) for the purpose of rape, the whole scenario bears precious little resemblance to any actual gay sexual dynamic or BDSM community practises. The contrast between having a consensual (or at any rate broken) slave in a permanently set up dungeon with committing random opportunistic abductions (and subsequent presumed murders, if you think it through) is just jarring. The closest thing it resembles is a kind of prison rapist mentality or a sort of urban version of the hillbillies in Deliverance.
This thread confirms most of what I believe:

Oddly enough, recently, I have become reconciled to the gimp word and its associations. Before the gimp entered popular consciousness a full hood was most often associated with rapists, kidnappers and terrorists. As a Dominant BDSM'er, I feel safer now.
